Abstract

Conclusion: As international travel becomes more common, the primary care physician will need to provide accurate information to his or her patients so that they can have safe and enjoyable trips. Since many potentially fatal illnesses that international travelers will face are preventable through simple immunizations and counseling, primary care physicians are in an ideal position to practice primary prevention with such patients. It is, therefore, important for them to have access to current information in this ever-changing field of medicine. Centers specializing in advice for the international traveler exist, and referrals to these centers may be appropriate for all but the most casual tourist. In addition, physicians planning to counsel and treat travelers should obtain the annually updated publicationHealth Information for International Travel and the periodic updates,Summary of Health Information for International Travel (Blue Sheets).
